I've been building a server like this for some time now, if your like me, u'll find some of the less simple aspects of the server are making it environment specific i.e. controlling library lists, allows it to use "job date" to control functionality, using a threaded approach to allow multiple processing. Adding new services to the server, without having to take it down (hint use a strong interface and reflection)... All this aside, it is worth every second of the work because once it is finished, u'll know a heck of a lot more about Java ;) and be able to offer functionality that might have been difficult to provide via RPG etc....

After much research, I haven't been able to come up with any clear answers.
I have an RPG program that calls a Java method. This program is used by
many users. Is there a way for just one JVM to be started and all users to
just attach to it, or is it mandatory that a new JVM be started for each
user's job? Is there a way to see how many JVMs are running on the iSeries?
I've found an article that tells me it's possible using the JNI function,
but I can't figure out how. Any help would be much appreciated!

There's no way for all users to attach to a single JVM for interactive use ... but it's not hard to create a java server application that listens on a data queue ... each users application would send requests via the data queue and the single java app would act and send responses by another data queue.

You could use a data queue keyed on the jobname or something similar.
