I saw an advice to avoid composing complex Excel save files, and instead generate the much simpler WKS files from Lotus 1-2-3 which Excel should read without any problems.

I have not tested it yet, but it makes sense to me. I'll report back next time we need to look at our "export to Excel"-solution.
