Using the code below when I open the file with notepad it doesn't have the
new line in it. i.e. the text is all one line like this:

Notepad doesn't like Ctrl-J's on its own (which is what the default is under Unix, which the Java environment behaves like under OS/400), but only Ctrl-M+Ctrl-J's.

You can use wordpad to see them with, or any sufficiently advanced editor on Windows. Personally I use vim, but that is just a matter of taste and background.
