Aren't you already trusting Sun just by using Java? I certainly trust Sun more than I trust Bill Gates. Then again, I trust Bill Gates about as far as I can throw a drydocked supertankerThat whole game changed when Sun began releasing Java under the GPL. That move basically means that the Java source have the potential to live for ever so your investment in Java is secure as such. When the OpenJDK is done (either verison 6 or 7) it is no longer possible for any evil company to buy Sun and withdraw all Java licenses which is the scenario I think of when you say "trust Sun".
