String question

Hi I am very new at this and I know this is very simple for all of you
experienced programmers. I am using netbeans 6 and trying to write
helloweb application. But when I am trying to create a string field I
am getting an error message "class interface or enum expected" I am
using some of the netbeans tutorial to do this example. However when I
am defining a int field there is no problem. am I missing to import a
file?
