The internal search function is temporarily non-functional. The current search engine is no longer viable and we are researching alternatives.
As a stop gap measure, we are using Google's custom search engine service.

I agree with the majority of comments posted. Unless I'm missing
something, I would recommend:
1. Use a firewall, user profiles, object security, SSL, and DMZ to
secure your environment. You can do this and NOT need a web service.
2. From your application server (tomcat/websphere) use JDBC to access
your databases.

I recommend the KISS principal adding web services and EJB seem to
overcomplictate your situation and will probably significantly degrade
performance and productivity.
I have been involved in several major EJB projects and they have been
"bad". The industry has largely turned its back on EJBs. I agree with
Walden here.... use them only if you know you need them.
