I suggest you use a byte array in Java.  It works a lot better than a
String.

It isn't strictly required, but it's best if you want to know the length
of the Java string without having to use %TRIM.  (%TRIM might not even
give the correct length, if the Java string happened to have leading or
trailing blanks.)
