This particular Java program is responsible for sending the contents of a member to a J2EE server elsewhere (using CORBA), and the actions to be taken in case of an error were changed, so I needed to create a response member providing information back to the legacy code.

As I understand it, it is easier to do networking from Java than from the Cobol version we use.

On a related note, I have been very satisfied with the quality of the Java implementation (1.4.2) on AS/400 - things just work.
