Retrieve SpoolFile data using SpoolFile Object

Has anyone successfully written a program that will retrieve spool file
data that is readable?  I found an example in the archives, but the text
from the String object is unreadable.  I do not want to copy the spool
file to a physical file because the program will be heavily used and I
foresee data stepping on each other.  Also, I am not sure the spooled
file data can be keyed.  I could be wrong though.  Any thoughts?
