Nigel- One way is to write a stored procedure or user-defined
function. Then call the stored procedure or user-defined function from
Java, using the same JDBC connection that you are planning to use for
your query.  The only downside to this is you would have to do a code
review to enforce that all Java programs using JDBC did this.
