This is a very viable option.  You would need a little work for handling
dates and timestamps, but it's certainly doable.  You'd still need a type
parameter to tell you what type of data you're getting (or another call to
get that information).  You'd have a double conversion for non-alpha data
and you'd have to have all your error handling in the RPG, but that's all
service program stuff.

Yeah, this is sort of the "XML" approach to things!  Drop to the lowest
common denominator of string data.
