This is a very viable option. You would need a little work for handling dates and timestamps, but it's certainly doable. You'd still need a type parameter to tell you what type of data you're getting (or another call to get that information). You'd have a double conversion for non-alpha data and you'd have to have all your error handling in the RPG, but that's all service program stuff. Yeah, this is sort of the "XML" approach to things!
