Ok I was thinking of using that, but I guess I'm not sure how I should 
approach it.  See here's the logic I need:
Lock Record
Show screen with locked record on it.
If user updates, update record, if they don't, just unlock it.
I'm using servlets and req and resp to produce the forms.
Do you have any examples of a similar process?

you may try with SELECT ... FOR UPDATE.
