One question though.
If the preparedstatement returns a null, does the resultset still have to 
be closed?

I would close the recordset first, then close the statement and then the 
connection.  (reverse order in which they are opened).

I *think* that is what I see in the code (little hard to read with all 
the whitespace wrapping in my e-mail client).
