Tony, It is possible to use a composite key but since those keys obviously have alternate meaning it will be more difficult. Where I think you will run into problems is with files that have multiple foreign keys that include the same key field. I would spend a week or so building simple tests and mappings to make sure you can work with the compromise -- this will be time well spent and help you get your mappings right before you develop any significant code. Hibernate 3 has some nice enhancements in this area but it is still beta. An alternative if you run into trouble might be iBatis. I know for sure there is no way I'll be allowed to add a "id" field to our databases due to the number of logical files and the mass rpg recompiles it would cause. We are in the import/export business, and the majority of our databases are keyed with a composite key of company, branch, division, year, file number, and file number suffix. So you guys fell it's is possible to set a <composite-id/> field in this situation with no modification to the existing databases. Thanks, Tony
