Tehre is a special object type for storing "customer-made" user profiles, so they are not AS users but can be checked with AS functions, and protected with some encription, I don't know how strong, but very likely better than an improvised algorithm.

This would require all the web users to have AS400 userids (as I
understand what you're saying). We want to be able to give them web
access without giving them AS400 access. The AS400s involved are
behind firewalls and DMZs.
