I would say you also need to override the "public Throwable getCause()" method to return a reference to the Exception that you are wrapping. (Assuming you are using Java 1.4, that is.) And I wouldn't have a message called "getAppLevelMsg()", I would override "public String getMessage()" from Exception. But now that I look through the API documentation some more, I see there's already a (1.4) constructor "new Exception(String message, Throwable cause)"; you could just override Exception and use that constructor and your work would be done.
