I would say you also need to override the "public Throwable getCause()" method
to return a reference to the Exception that you are wrapping. (Assuming you are
using Java 1.4, that is.) And I wouldn't have a message called
"getAppLevelMsg()", I would override "public String getMessage()" from
Exception.

But now that I look through the API documentation some more, I see there's
already a (1.4) constructor "new Exception(String message, Throwable cause)";
you could just override Exception and use that constructor and your work would
be done.

Subject: Creating customer Exception class

would below be a good way to create a customer Exception class that contains
application level error message?

public class MyException extends Exception {
    private String appLevelMsg;

    public MyException(String appLevelMsg, Exception ex) {
        super(ex);
        this.appLevelMsg = appLevelMsg;
   }

    public String getAppLevelMsg() {
        return appLevelMsg;
    }
}
