Ha!  Yes, but usually it's just to determine what JDBC driver to load or
whether we're in test vs. production environments.  


Interesting strategy using the operating system to determine JDBC driver :) 

What about other operating systems that can host multiple vendors databases ?

What about if the database server was on a different to host to the application 
code ?
