RE: Our OO Verus Procdedural Discussions and New Forum

Just to put my two scents in.

I am all for this comparison and I think it would be priceless to many
shops.  I also feel that this mailing list is the perfect place to
facilitate such a discussion because it definitely has to do with Java
and David has made it quite clear that is the prerequisite for content.


For a longer term project I do agree that a separate wiki style server
would be better just so we don't get inundated with emails specifically
for this upcoming project/comparison.

Hm.  I guess I don't consider myself an "RPG programmer" or a "Java
programmer", Buck.  I consider myself a programmer who happens to know a
few languages, including RPG and Java.

If anything, I consider myself an iSeries programmer, which is the
target audience of this list and indeed the whole of www.midrange.com.
And IMHO, if you're going to be an iSeries programmer, you ought to know
at the very least RPG, SQL and CL, with your choice of Java, C, MI and
REXX thrown in as additional languages.  You may substitute COBOL for
RPG as needed.  Stir, serve over ice.

So I suspect that the majority of people here have at least seen RPG.  I
may be wrong.  Show of hands, folks?  And not to the list, please, send
them privately to me: java400l@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx  If anybody responds,
I'll count of the totals and post a result in a few days.

Now, if there are programmers here who program primarily in Java and
don't know anything about RPG, then I would view this as a great
opportunity to learn one of the fundamental languages of my machine.  In
fact, often the very best way to learn a new language is to compare it
to one you already know.
