As I understand it, the new JDK/JRE, new meaning 1.4.x, which now supports 
headless awt will allow you to do image manipulation without needing a graphics 
capable device.

It's similar to installing Xvfb [http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.1/Xvfb.1.html] on, 
say a Solaris server when the server doesn't have a physical graphics card so 
that server side programs can still manipulate graphics and send the result 
back to a client, or save an image file, etc.
