Carriage return

I put into a html textarea two words (let's say A and B) separated by a 
carriage return. This is inserted via Jdbc into a AS400 db field and it appears 
as
HEX ( FIELD ) = C1 0D 25 C2
 
Now i retrieve this field and I display it with:
String FIELD  = rs.getString(1);        
FIELD:<%= FIELD %> 
 
The Hex of returned value is 0410d0a042 
but it appears as "A B" instead of 
A
B
 
What am I missing ?
