We've used JavaMail to send mail with the client running on an AS/400 and the SMTP server running elsewhere for some time, incorporating that into our Wintouch product, because of the apparent lack of any other AS/400 support for external non-AS/400 SMTP servers, and I don't think we've ever had a problem even remotely like what you've described. -- JHHL
