My understanding is that it requires a very substantial rewrite of the whole run-time system. It was looked at for V4R4, but even making the thread serialize option (which does lock only at the module level by the way) work took most of the compiler resource for that release. There would inevitably be compatibility issues too which would mean far more exhaustive testing requirements. There may be some divine inspiration on the part of Barbara, Hans and the crew that suddenly render it trivial but I doubt it. Frankly the biggest inhibitor is that Rochester still view RPG as old and tired and having no place in a "modern" world. Until that attitude changes (somewhere around the time that George Jr and Sadam go out for a drink together I suspect!! ) then there will never be the funding etc. needed to get it into plan.
