taglibs in WAS 3.5.4

I'm trying to use parametrised tags (tags with attributes) in WAS 3.5.4
environment. All my tags have the following format:

<eqj:GZAB gzab="<%= oasiBean.GZAB%>"/>

The bean is available in the page context. JSP processor does not complain
but the tag class attribute setter method receives the "<%= oasiBean.GZAB%>"
string as the parameter, not the value of oasiBean.GZAB property. What is it
I'm doing wrong? Or is this a 3.5.4 bug?
