XP and Java -- JAVA400-L

I was wondering if anyone could confirm or deny that XP will
or will not run java applications.

>From what I read it won't, as is, but a seperate JRE is
required to run applets et al.  But, I assume I can still
install Java and run applications as I used to on W98.

Anyone got the official down low?
