If you are running v5r1, have you tried the on-thread option of Toolbox
program / command call? If you mark your program / command call objects as
thread safe then the Toolbox runtime directly calls the program / command
instead of running the request via the command/program call server. For
example, suppose you code up ...

      AS400 system = new AS400();
      CommandCall cc = new CommandCall(system);
      cc.setThreadSafe(true);
      cc.run("ADDLIBLE xxxx");

The command is run in the Java job on the thread that calls cc.run().

We try to keep the overhead involved with the AS400 object small, so even
on-thread may not give you what you are looking for. It may be worth a
try, though. Remember, you need v5r1 or later, and use Toolbox jar
/qibm/proddata/os400/jt400/lib/jt400Native.jar.

Does anyone use Runtime.getRuntime().exec to call programs on the 400?

I have an application that calls a COBOL program to perform some
complicated
business logic spanning numerous files. I need to call the program with
some parameters. The data is returned by a socket. Before this program
calls the COBOL program, I start a new thread that is a socket server to
listen for the response from the COBOL program.

Right now I am using ProgramCall class to call the program. I use
CommandCall to set the library list. Both of these need an AS400 object.
I
would like to eliminate the overhead of the AS400 object communication and
do a direct call to the program.

I was thinking of using Runtime.getRuntime().exec to execute the commands
and to call the program. I was not sure if Runtime.getRuntime().exec can
call a program with parameters.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Mike
