Joe,

- No, we are not running WebSphere. We decided to hold it off for a
while.
- No, it's not IBM or a Business Partner who told us to install on a
Win2000 system (or NT). However it's a company with lot's of AS400
experience at both hardware and software level.
- At the 'Stay Tuned' sessions we talked about our performance problems.
But... everybody keep telling us that our 720 (Int.Feat. 260F) should be
capable of running WAS353SE + 6 Domino's + Native Apps + WebFacing.

We checked all relating to performance for both WAS and Domino with
Redbooks and found some Domino pitfall's. Still after solving them
(they took down average CPU usage from 80% to 60%) we get really
performance problems when:
1) Domino is running for a while. (After shutting down and startup
performance is better for a while)
2) When accomplishing tasks from within AdminConsole. (Like adding apps,
servlets, start/stop etc...)

We have lost too much time 'waiting' and are planning to put Domino on a
separate machine in future. For now, we would like to install WAS on a
Win2000 machine. Our goal is to 'experiment' with the Websphere Studio
tools as well and take a closer look in the configuration of WAS-server,
configuring Web-Apps, adding servlets to WebApps (in WAS), use built-in
authorization (logon to use apps) and, last but not least, use
connection-pooling... At this point it is unavoidable to do those task
which takes down performance. I only hope that I don't 'move' the
problem to the Win2000 environment...

Patrick, who is advising you to run on an NT server? And why? Is it
because you are using WebFacing? Because I guarantee that you do not
need to move to NT. Whether you use my product or do something like it
yourself, performance is very, very good on even a small AS/400.

One caution is that the model 720 is not a very good machine for Java in
general and WebSphere in particular. The later models, such as the
model 270 and the 8xx series, are much, much better for Java and
WebSphere. But no matter what, whoever told you to move to NT is
absolutely wrong, and I'd like to know if this is IBM or a business
partner.

Joe
