One of the big advantages of a JIT compiler over a traditional compiler is that the JIT compiler has visibility to all of the code that will be run. In theory, the JIT compiler should include small getter/setter methods as inline code, eliminating any performance hit that comes from organizing the code in a more maintainable fashion. I'm not sure of the sophistication of the iSeries JIT compiler but I am sure that it will get better over time. You'd need to run some tests to see how much of a performance price you're paying.
