You mean that the getBigDecimal method of ResultSet was deprecated? How about this: BigDecimal rate = new BigDecimal(rs.getString(3)); As for your second question, there is a class called ResultSetMetaData that can give you this sort of information. But you might get away with simply reading all fields via getString() and letting the spreadsheet figure out what is numbers and what isn't.
