Hello David, >I don't know where you find this stuff, so I can't go look myself, but >if you know off hand, I would be interested in whether the the data >queue sorted on every dequeue or only on a dequeue with when after an >entry has arrived? I 'know' this stuff 'cause I've seen some of the code -- a very long time ago now I used to write parts of OS/400 for IBM. I also had an involved discussion with one of the developers when the RISC systems arrived because the company I was working for at the time had a performance problem due to filling the queue before starting the reader. That's how I know the timing of the sort changed. I'm fairly sure the sort occurs only if new entries have arrived between dequeue operations. >Also, do you know whether the whole entry is sorted rather than just the >key? Maybe that is why I could not recognize a difference between sorted >data queues and a user index. I believe the entire entry is moved around but the sort is performed only on the key length. I'd need to write code and play to be sure -- as I said it's been a VERY long time.
