Actually, if you generate XML, you can create an XLS document. But I think, you will need Office Web components installed. When you save an XLS spreadsheet, try saving it as a web page. And then open the web page using Notepad to see all the XML. If you open the webpage in IE, you will see the Excel office web component bring up the sheet. I am not an expert but just what I noticed in Office 2000 and above. And I think, you can use RPG or cobol also to generate this XML.
