The only thing I would add to Larry's suggestions are to be sure that the CCSID of the IFS files always match the CCSID of the data that is actually in the file. When you're creating the files with RPG, they're surely being tagged as the jobs CCSID (guessing US ebcdic 37), and in that case, they better also contain US ebcdic CCSID 37 data, or bad things will happen (with various text methods of reading the file). Using the native APIs, you can specify a CCSID of a file when you create it with the open or fopen API. To view the CCSID of a file WRKLNK '/directory' Option 8 on your files. In every single ethnic, religious or racial group, there are a very few truly evil people. For each of those people there are many, many, many good people.
