Not being a guru and observing from the sidelines, I'm a bit worried about
this.  My colleagues here and on various mailing lists all seem to want to
use JDBC since it's the standard way to access the DB.

When I mention writing custom "drivers" (not the right word, but the concept
is there) for the iSeries database, I get the "why on earth would you want
to re-invent the wheel?" look.  When I say "screaming performance" I get the
"how can a hundred thousand dollar machine be slower than a two thousand
dollar PC?" look.

Is JDBC performance really that bad vs the competition?
