Perhaps try a newer version of java or use the CLASSPATH
as recommended by Rich.
To Set:
  export -s CLASSPATH=/yourpath:/morestuff
To Check:
  echo $CLASSPATH

The -classpath in older versions of java actually replaced the
classpath that you would view as 'built-in' with whatever classpath
you specified. Don't recall if the CLASSPATH env variable did
it.
To Compile:
  javac -J-Djava.version=1.2 -classpath /yourpath YourClass
To Run:
  java -Djava.version=1.2 -classpath /yourpath YourClass
