Look at the Javadoc carefully.

The property "final" is marked in Javadoc for classes
and public methods so declared.

Also, a lot of the really "core" classes were either
all synchronized (StringBuffer, HashTable) or "final"
(String, Integer, Double).

The Java architects had and still have a notion that
this strategy simplifies thread safe programming.
I'm not so sure since it does nothing for actual
object references anyhow.  In any event, for more complex
interfaces, this has been at least partially abandoned
(e.g. Swing and the various collection objects).
