I agree that portability is a big plus. I have experienced this first hand on my current project. We have written java applications that process messages from MQSeries queues as they are generated and update target relational database systems. We wrote a common architecture in java that runs on Sun Solaris, AS/400 and Windows NT. JDBC is used to call stored procedures with in the target DB environment. We were able to develop and test these applications on Windows NT and deployed to the target platforms without changing a line of code. I am confident that if another platform is introduced, we would be able to deploy this same architecture very easily. I understand that SQL is not as efficient as RPG database access, but if you are in a multi-platform environment the portability of Java is huge. Alan A. Heitkamp H.B. It can't run as fast as RPG (though it is getting better... and I'm old enough to remember hearing the same arguement about COBOL and Assembler). RPG is better known by folks in the AS/400 community. What can Java do that RPG can't and vice versa? Or if you have programmed in both for a decent amount of time what do you like more about one language vs. the other?
