I don't thinks this is nit-picky, it is a subtle but important point (especially for java programmers) and we all should be careful about claiming that OS/400 is OO. IMO, OS/400 provides 1 out of 3 of the characteristics of an OO system: 1) Data Encapsulation - OS/400 has it. The data contained in objects some objects as physical files and data queues could be considered an exception since you don't need to use OS commands to change the data. However, the object's attributes can still only be modified through the OS. 2) Inheritance - OS/400 doesn't have it. Too bad - it would make life much easier if, for example, you wanted to add a couple of attributes to a user profile. 3) Polymorphism - OS/400 doesn't have it.
