Well Mike, this is not exactly an example but...
Create a file on the 400 that is 132 long or 160 depending on your printing standards:
Create Physical File (CRTPF)
Type choices, press Enter.
File . . . . . . . . . . . . . . > REC132 Name
Library . . . . . . . . . . . > PICKONE Name, *CURLIB
Source file . . . . . . . . . . QDDSSRC Name
Library . . . . . . . . . . . *LIBL Name, *LIBL, *CURLIB
Source member . . . . . . . . . *FILE Name, *FILE
Record length, if no DDS . . . . > 132 Number
Generation severity level . . . 20 0-30
Flagging severity level . . . . 0 0-30
File type . . . . . . . . . . . *DATA *DATA, *SRC
Member, if desired . . . . . . . *FILE Name, *FILE, *NONE
Text 'description' . . . . . . . Holds reports
then copy the spoolfile to the file you created, note that I am not doing this so some of my entries may not be needed, but what is important is the Database File name and the Spool file number, also change the *ADD to *REPLACE after the first time. You also might want to alter the file size to *NOMAX (ducking bullets here) or some specific size that you shop accepts.
Copy Spooled File (CPYSPLF)
Type choices, press Enter.
Spooled file . . . . . . . . . . SpoolFile Name
To data base file . . . . . . . REC132 Name
Library . . . . . . . . . . . PICKONE Name, *LIBL, *CURLIB
Job name . . . . . . . . . . . . SOMEJOB Name, *
User . . . . . . . . . . . . . SOMEUSER Name
Number . . . . . . . . . . . . 000000-999999
Spooled file number . . . . . . 999999 1-9999, *ONLY, *LAST
To member . . . . . . . . . . . *FIRST Name, *FIRST
Replace or add records . . . . . *ADD *REPLACE, *ADD
Additional Parameters
Control character . . . . . . . *NONE *NONE, *FCFC, *PRTCTL...
and once in the file, use FTP to get it to the client if a PC it is easier for the client to "get" the file.
Hope this helps!

Subject: Does anyone have a spool file output to text file example they
could share?
Hi,
Does anyone on the listserv have a code snippet they could share, that outputs a
spool
file from the AS/400 to a text file on a client machine?
I saw the read spool file example on the toolkit pages at IBM, but they
don't include one where the file is transformed to a readable text file
on the client.
Thanks a lot for your time,
Mike
