you didn't say, but if field is a String...

if (field.equals(new String(" ")))

As a String object, your code would compare the reference to the string (its
name) to a blank or null.  The null would only test equal if there was no
instance of the String reference and the blank will never be equal.  You
have to use a method to compare the contents.
