I'm suprised no one offered even one guess at it. I can't believe a
mailing list like this would not have someone prepared to take a shot at
it...

Well, the AS/400 is missing the wonderful INETD, and in my role as
developer of TCP/IP applications on both AS/400, Unix & NT (NT also has
this missing too, so I'm not just annoyed at the AS/400 ;-) I find I
have to code around this limitation. Currently we're having to add a
fair amount of code to try and detect when TCP/IP is fully up and
running [NOTE: the STRTCP command does send a message that TCP is
started, but it is not *fully* up and running] so that we can start
binding to ports as listening services. The time between the message
from STRTCP and the actual point you can use the socket layer is a
moving set of goal posts.

If INETD existed on the AS/400 (or at least in a guise where we could
register applications to our own ports) we wouldn't care ! INETD would
take care of waiting until the socket layer was up properly.

BTW: On NT, at least we can install it as a service, and make our
service dependent on the TCP/IP services, to work around the issue...

Ah well, enough ranting...
