AS/400 Toolbox for Java (modification 1) works with V3R2--that is, you can use
Toolbox classes to access the V3R2 system from a Java applet or application
running on another system.  Look at http://www.as400.ibm.com/toolbox/order.htm

Java running natively on the AS/400 system started with V4R2.  The technology
preview--which to my knowledge is no longer available--ran only on V3R7 and
V4R1.

V4R2, to be exact, with no hope for older versions.
There was a "technology preview" of Java that was a port of Sun's JVM
running _ON_TOP_ of the MI, rather than under the MI-level as the "real"
JVM runs (i.e. a real crawler), but even this, I believe, required V3R7
(which is RISC) or higher.
