I was confused too.  WebSphere is simply an application server.
Application server is  a system with preload jobs (connection threads).  It
will locate correct programs (naming service) and run these programs to
response clients' request.

WebSphere uses HTTP to communicates, therefore we need a HTTP server in
order for client to connect to application server.  However, not all
application servers communicate through HTTP.
