I can not remember if this was already mentioned or not, so here it is.
The best book I found (for a C type of programmer) for learning JAVA is
Bruce Eckle's "Thinking in Java".  This is very well written with lots of
examples and discussion.  I am not through yet.  I have covered 4 chapters
and still ticking.  Visit his web site (, there is a PDF format of this book
you can donload and read, see if you like it.
