IBM's Native Java virtual machine will run any Java application including those with AWT components. The way they will do this is NOT from a green screen but from an attached system where the GUI will be manipulated. They will use Remote-AWT calls between the AS/400 and the connected system. The connected system could be any system running a Java virtual machine. I'm assuming the typical connection would be TCP/IP between the two systems. At the same time, IBM has stated that you wouldn't use this configuration to write a heads down data entry application due to performance of remote AWT but it will work fine for occasioinal use functions and application administrative functions. The real value of Java on the AS/400 is as an application server for a distributed application. In this case, the application you are moving from platform to platform is the back end server which you are moving to an AS/400 and using the AS/400 database using JDBC. I am making the distinction of an application server (the back end of a distributed application) and a web server serving java applets. I can use the AS/400 today (V3R2) as a web server to just serve up applets to a client. I have to wait for V4R2 to run my Java developed application server.
