I'm currently contracting in an environment that has a mix of iSeries and
Wintel Domino servers. The Wintel servers are running in a VM
environment, Windows 64 bit. The servers are down for various reasons at
least once a week. The outages range from VMWare problems to Windows 64
problems to AV problems and probably other problems that I'm not even
aware of. All the while, the iSeries servers never go down.
Even with this downtime, the network support group is constantly pushing
to move the rest of the Domino servers off the iSeries and onto Wintel. I
know why the network support group wants this -- the more servers they
have, the more job security. But I don't quite understand why any company
would consider that move...
As a side note to any IBM'rs that are monitoring this forum -- the only
reason this company has Wintel Domino servers in the first place is for
BES and Traveler. When will Traveler be supported on the iSeries ???

We are at the stage of trying to determine and convince the boss on the
best
platform to install Domino plus Quickr and Sametime. I'm the iSeries
bigot
with a belief in its superior stability and reliability and will only
concede to running active directory and citrix on the Windows servers. Our
network manager doesn't know the iSeries and is a like-minded Windows
bigot.
In the local area, there are only a couple of iSeries running Domino but
many Windows installs.
I'm looking for support for my view to implement on iSeries. Any facts,
suggestions or Windows-killing arguments would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe this has been covered many times on this site and if so, my
apologies
for not having found it.
Many thanks,
Carl Pitcher
