We had been advised that maximum 25 users per Citrix server is a
good rule
of thumb. Looks like you are following that same standard. I was
hoping
that Domino might be a special case that could support more. We
have an
opportunity to move Domino to an offsite location, but that would
mean all
250 Notes users would need to work through Citrix. That's a
farm-and-a-half of Citrix servers.
Are your local users going through Citrix or the Notes Client?

We have 4 like configured Citrix servers set up with load
balancing. They
are currently supporting about 25 each and can ramp up to 50.
Currently
each is a separate blade - but they are all in the same blade center.
(Other priories have placed getting the DR site up on the back
burner.)
When the DR site is up we plan on having two blades out there running
Citrix also.
I've been told that it made a HUGE difference to our users in our
plant in
El Paso. Notes over Citrix is fast for them, while the same domino
application may take 15 minutes to open an attachment if not run from
within Citrix.
Citrix to me almost sounds like the resurrection of the dumb terminal
although with full graphical and other capabilities.

We use Citrix here. Often it is because you can get a much faster
response time - especially with Notes type applications. Yes,
working in
the same building as the Notes servers is cool. Working remotely
can be a
burden. And we've spared no expense on our remote networking. Citrix
clears a lot of this up. Since we are between where you work and home
you're welcome to stop by and check it out. Make an appointment with
Chris Edwards here. He's out on his Harley this week. We could
even run
you out to the remote plant in Garrett and see with Citrix versus
without
Citrix
Years ago I was amazed how an old 486 PC loaded up as a Citrix
client got
a better response time than the souped up desktop used by our PC
technicians. And they were in the same building. I have a laptop
that I
take home. I also have a dog of a desktop at home. We're thinking of
removing Notes, iSeries Access and everything else work related from
that
one and just using Citrix Client on it. From home I connect using
Ligtel's wireless towers.
We may finally get around to moving our Domino cluster backup server
out
of the same room as the primary (a DR plan gone bad). That will
move to
our largest production facility. Probably pointing all of the
clients at
that site to that server would then make sense. Then again our
primary
runs on a 9406-MMA-5461 (aka Power 6 570). Our backup is a 9408-
M25-5634.
The backup actually has more lpars - but that's because the Mimix
backup
lpar has no Domino partitions - they are in their own lpar. While the
main production lpar on the primary has eleven Domino partitions.

Performance has not really changed. It is just getting more
attention. We
have had the network crew studying, testing and tweaking this. They
say
it is not a bandwidth issue or a Class of Service issue. The
applications
themselves are about 10 years old and could probably use some
rewrites,
but that is not going to happen due to the cost. Response time over
the
LAN with the client and server at the same location is fine.

Why are these databases performing worse now? I've got to think that
usually
it's bandwidth that causes this problem, is this a problem because
of file
attachments or is there something else at play?
