Data compression

   I'm researching ways to improve our WAN performance besides the obvious
   need to get faster WAN links or the alternatives. Domino is a major
   consumer, with server to server mail transfer and replication, etc.

   If I enable data compression (availabe in R6) on a Domino port, this might
   help, but I was wondering if there is a tradeoff in CPU utilization. Does
   anyone know how this will impact the system? Mainly, does the CPU do the
   compression, or does the network adapter IOP handle the work?

   Any other experiences with the data compression? Data encryption poses the
   same question. I'm not interested in the encryption right now, but it
   might be good to know.

   Domino 6.5.4 FP2 on i5/520 V5R3, using #2849 10/100 Ethernet IOA, not the
   built in 520's  Ethernet, if it matters.
