You WILL need to be running R6 before upgrading your OS/400 past V5R2. 
That's the end of the line for R5.

Well, you are one up on us. We are on R5.0.8.01, so all of those fine R6
features are not available. However, since you mention it, I think that I 
have
been looking at this issue as strictly a Trend problem. I think that now I
will pursue this as a Domino issue, and lobby for R6. Sometimes the trees 
are
so dense (or me), I really can't see the forest. :-)
