Any chance that all of your 5250 users use PC's? If so, then instead of a variable length field it could be a DATALINK field. In one of our databases we used one. The contents of the field has something like //myserver/myshare/mydoc.doc And then to edit that field you can load your editor of choice on the PC. We use it to link engineering drawings to an item number.
