If you insist on doing it outside of the Domino server, then bring the server down and use the CPY.

Well you KNOW that's not possible :)

Otherwise, there are some utilities to do this within the domino server, that can be started with SBMDOMCMD

Unfortunately, that's not an option either.

I *THOUGHT* that, because I was using the Java API to Domino, I would be performing the copies (and ultimately deletes) through the server ... thus avoiding the database lock issues .... At least, that's the impression I got from Walter's post.

About a year ago I did some testing and thought that I had been able to perform a database copy after opening & closing the database in the designer.

btw: The database that I'm trying to copy, and getting an error on, has never been opened by a Domino client application (client, designer, or administrator). In fact, the database isn't even in the Domino data directory. It appears I'm able to do the copy after the Domino server is initially started, but the copy operation leaves the database open so I can no longer perform copies.

This, of course, leads me to another question ... is there a way to close a database once it's been opened? The Database class has an "open()" method, and "isOpen()", but no "close()".

Thanks!

david
