I suppose that you have to look at clustering not automatically replicating databases as a "feature" if you want to maintain a positive mental attitude. Suppose you have your iSeries with lots of databases. But at your remote site you're running some lowly wintel solution. And there is only a few databases at that remote site that you really need clustered over to there. Not automatically putting the databases there frees up disk, comm, and processor. Now, the Akornn software does not do it automatically either upon creation of a new database. You just set up some steps to run it on a periodic basis. And, yes, you can still get the Akornn software to create the replicas on the remote systems even if they are not in the cluster. It doesn't care if the remote server is in the cluster or not. What possible problems can Akornn cause? Just remember to do the steps in this method: Run the akornn command to ensure that LocalDomainServers is in the ACL TELL CLREPL QUIT - do this on both the from and to servers TELL REPLICA QUIT - do this on both the from and to servers Run the akornn command to create the replica's LOAD CLREPL - do this on both the from and to servers LOAD REPLICA - do this on both the from and to servers Leaving CLREPL and REPLICA running during the akornn creation of the replicas WILL corrupt your data. You have to manually replicate it to all the cluster nodes? If you're not concerned with clustering failover, what does it get you? Honestly, I had hoped that any db's created would be automatically replicated to the other nodes in the cluster. But the software from akornn takes care of this? If you don't have two nodes actually clustered, can the akornn software still automatically replicate all new db's created on system A to system B? Mike E. PS - Don't ask why they want the second node to be a non-400 box. rob@dekko.com Sent by: To: Lotus Domino on the iSeries / AS400 <domino400@midrange.com> domino400-bounces+meovino=estes-express.com@mi cc: drange.com Subject: Re: Domino Clustering (was Re: Trying to add Admin group to mailfilesACL and running out of time) 01/29/03 11:34 AM Please respond to Lotus Domino on the iSeries / AS400 It's not hard to set up. Yes you can cluster between differing platforms. (Why would you want to? :-) ) We have several iSeries running Domino. We bring the primary down every night to do backup. We bring the secondary down during the day on Thursdays to do a weekly save/rclstg/ipl. It's freaking amazing how seamless this is! I bet there is no other iSeries High Availability vendor who comes even close. On the primary we have 8 Domino partitions. Each partition is in a separate cluster. On the secondary is a matching partition. Primary Secondary Cluster NOTES01 NOTES02 NOTESCLUSTER GDDATA GDDATA2 GDDATACLUSTER ... I would read the standard Domino documentation, and the Domino for iSeries documentation on doing this. I don't know if there is a redbook dealing with an actual case study. The toughest is making sure that if you create a database on the primary that you remember to replicate it to the secondary. That is THE biggest reason that we purchased the akornn software. 800+ users with any turnover at all and the mail files alone are a maintenance headache. Now, granted occasionally a file gets corrupted (and I have a long standing pmr opened on this). But it sure is a lot easier to blast the file on the primary and replicate it back over from the secondary than it is to dig out the backup tapes. It takes an average of 3 hours to restore a single mail file from tape. Of course, our Domino backup alone spans onto the fourth 3590 tape (green button). We find ourselves rearranging the ifs SAV to get the directory most likely to need restored done first. I have a couple of questions: 1. Can you cluster Domino servers on different platforms (i.e. OS/400 & Windows 2K), or do they all have to be on the same platform? 2. Is it difficult to set up? Can I do it myself, or should I bring in an expert? 3. If it's not difficult to set up, where can I find documentation on setting this up? Thanks for the tip on the software. Just the ACL manager by itself would probably be worth it.
